5IVE MiniDisc Recorder
Not claimed5IVE turns Apple Music into a deliberate MiniDisc-inspired listening ritual
By Marc Offman · Music and audioWhy we expect it: A thoughtful, carefully described idea that turns Apple Music into a charming, deliberate listening ritual.
In short
5IVE MiniDisc Recorder turns Apple Music into a deliberate listening routine modeled on MiniDisc. Users search the catalog, preview tracks for ten seconds, and record up to five selections onto a virtual disc before playback. It needs an active Apple Music subscription and stores only catalog identifiers and metadata, never audio. Its amber dot-matrix display and haptic controls recreate a late-1990s portable recorder.

5IVE turns Apple Music into a deliberate MiniDisc-inspired listening ritual.
Search the catalog by artist, album or track, listen to a ten-second preview, choose a 74- or 80-minute virtual disc and record the selection before it can be played. SP keeps the original running time; LP2 doubles the available programme time. Transfer at real time or 2× speed.
Pack exactly five discs into the case. Once the case is locked, only those five discs are available for playback until the selected packing interval has elapsed. Your wider collection remains safely archived.
The interface is a tactile homage to late-1990s portable recorders: an amber dot-matrix LCD, fixed transport keys, a four-way control ring, mechanical mode switch and haptic feedback.
Features: • album and individual-track recording from Apple Music metadata • ten-second catalog previews • 74- and 80-minute discs with SP and LP2 formats • 1× and 2× transfer speed • repeat, single-repeat and shuffle-repeat playback • private iCloud sync and recovery snapshots • optional one-to-one NFC cartridge pairing • recording progress in the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island
An active Apple Music subscription and internet connection are required for catalog search and playback. 5IVE stores catalog identifiers and metadata only; it never copies or downloads Apple Music audio.
