About

Name a real lightning flash over Berlin.

Submit a name – your own, your grandma's, your godchild's. It waits in the queue. As soon as the weather satellite sees the next flash over Berlin, the first name in line gets it. The naming is recorded on the blockchain: public, verifiable, forever.

HOW IT WORKS • Enter a name – free, no account, no sign-up • Wait: first come, first served • Blitz! About 5 to 15 minutes after the flash you get a notification and see where and when it struck • Share: a card with name, place and time and the certificate, ready to send

THE SKY OVER BERLIN • Live: where is lightning right now across Europe? • How far is the nearest thunderstorm from Berlin – and is it coming closer? • How many flashes did the satellite count in the last hour?

THE BLITZCHAIN • Every named flash with place and time, as a list or on the map – with the name if its owner chooses. By default your name stays private • Each naming is a token on the blockchain. The app checks it there directly, not through our server • You don't need a wallet of your own

REAL DATA The flashes come from the Lightning Imager on the weather satellite Meteosat Third Generation, 36,000 km above the equator. It also sees flashes between clouds and locates them to within a few kilometres. Contains EUMETSAT data (CC BY 4.0).

Thunderstorms over Berlin happen mostly from May to August. Your name waits – even through the winter.

The naming is a symbolic gift. A flash's name has no legal effect, and the token is not an investment.
