Hearing Words - Live Captions

Hearing Words writes down what people say, as they say it, in big clear words on your phone.

Set the phone on the table, or hold it in your hand. When someone speaks, their words appear on the screen a moment later. You read along instead of asking people to repeat themselves.

WHAT IT DOES FOR YOU

• Words appear as people talk, in type as big as you like. The largest size can be read from across a table. • When someone says their name, it is shown above their words, so you can see who said what. • If it hears a word wrong, it fixes it a few seconds later. It never makes up a word it did not hear. • Every conversation is saved on your phone, so you can read back what you missed. • Turn the phone on its side for wider lines. The buttons get out of the way while you read. Tap anywhere to bring them back. • Dark screen or light screen, plain or serif letters, your choice.

PRIVATE

Everything happens on your phone. Nothing you say, and nothing anyone says to you, is ever sent anywhere. There is no account, no sign-in, and no internet needed. It works in Airplane Mode.

WHAT IT COSTS

The first hour of listening is free, so you can try it in your own kitchen and your own café. The clock only runs while the app is listening, and it never cuts you off in the middle of a talk. When the hour is used up, you choose one of two ways to keep going. Both give you unlimited listening:

• Hearing Words Forever: $34.99, paid once. It is yours for good. • Hearing Words Yearly: $9.99 a year. It renews each year until you turn it off.

Both give you the very same app. There are no ads and no other charges. With Family Sharing, a son or daughter can buy it and share it with you. GOOD TO KNOW

• English only, for now. • Needs iPhone 15 Pro or newer, with iOS 18 or newer. On an older iPhone the app says so as soon as it opens, before you pay anything. • The app is large (about 1.2 GB) because the speech models live inside it. Download it over Wi-Fi. • It writes down the people in the room with you. It cannot write down phone calls. For calls, use Live Captions, which is built into your iPhone. • It is a reading aid, not a medical device. It does not test or treat hearing.
