About

Iowa Herps is a field guide to the reptiles and amphibians of Iowa.

Browse frogs, toads, salamanders, lizards, turtles, and snakes. Each account has a photo and short notes on how to recognize it, where it lives, and how large it gets.

Map a sighting with a photo and a note. Pins are colored by group, and you can filter the map to frogs, salamanders, turtles, snakes, and the other groups.

Identify a photo of an Iowa herp. Take a picture or choose one from your library. The app sends it to an AI model and returns a guess from the Iowa list, with a short reason. The guess can be wrong. You can open the matching account and, if you want, save the sighting to the map.

The guide is free. Sightings you add are stored so they can be shown on the map.
