About

Every Russian word is made of parts: a prefix, a root, a suffix, an ending. Learn the parts, and words you have never studied start to open by themselves.

Matryoshka teaches Russian from the inside out. Like the nesting doll, the language has layers — Sound, Beat, Root, Word, Link and Thought — and you grow through all six.

WHAT YOU DO IN A SESSION • Word forge: build a word from its parts — вы + ход + н + ой = выходной, "day off". • You can read this: read a word you have never studied, because you already know every part of it. • Two sounds: tell apart sounds English doesn't have — ы and и, hard and soft consonants, ш and щ. • Beat: catch the stressed syllable. Ordinary Russian text doesn't mark it. • Case bridge: choose the right ending through English — of, to, with, in. • Root and sentence: match roots with their meanings and put words together into sentences.

MADE FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS The sounds you train and the way cases are explained are chosen for an English speaker's ear and grammar. The genitive is "of", the dative is "to", the instrumental is "with" — six cases, each with a bridge from English. Explanations are in English, and you can switch to German, Japanese or Chinese at any time.
