About

Momento is a diary for your phone. You write what today was like — a few words, a mood, a place — and it goes on your page, for the people who follow you to read. Any moment can be kept to yourself instead, with one tap at the top of the page, and a private moment is yours alone, on every phone you sign in on.

Any moment can be made private, and made public again. The choice is per moment and it is reversible: there is no switch for the whole diary, because a diary with one switch is either a blog or a vault, and this is meant to be neither. A public moment goes to your page, to the feeds of the people who follow you, and to a link you can send to somebody.

"On this day" brings back what you wrote on the same date in earlier years, above today's page, in brass. That is the thing a diary is for, and Momento does it without being asked.

With Plus, a page can hold a photo, and it stays exactly as private as the moment it is in: a private photo is served to you and to nobody else, and there is no album anyone can browse. Everybody else wears one of twelve drawn faces — the diary's twelve moods as colours — and a photo of your own comes with Plus too.

The feed is the people you follow, or everyone, newest first. There is no algorithm, no ranking, no suggestion of who to follow. You can like a moment and follow a person, and that is the whole of the social side. No comments, no direct messages, no notifications.

Momento has no advertising, no analytics and no trackers. Your first notebook, 48 pages, is free. When it is full the next one is on the shelf, and so are rooms to write in and Momento Plus: a notebook that never fills, with a photo on every page, for $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year, renewing until you cancel. Reading what you have written is never sold. It is made by Algol Industries and it asks for nothing beyond a sign-in, which a diary needs so it knows whose it is.

WHO CAN SEE WHAT

Private moments are read by nobody and never shown to anybody. Public moments are checked automatically before they are shown and a short list of things — slurs, threats, content about children — cannot be posted publicly at all. Every public moment carries Report and Block. Reporting puts the moment in front of a person, who reads it and acts within 24 hours: anything against the terms comes down for everyone, and the writer loses the public side of Momento. Blocking is yours alone: neither of you sees the other again, and nobody is told. A box to write to a person is in Settings and beside every report, and the address of a real mailbox is printed next to it.

You must be 13 or older to have an account. Your account, your diary, your photos and your handle can be deleted from inside the app, at once, with nothing of it kept.
