Why we expect it: The description clearly explains a distinctive uncertainty ribbon and transparent data sources, making its value easy to grasp.

In short

Ninety Sky is a weather app covering the contiguous United States that turns National Weather Service data and radar into a ninety-minute rain forecast, with the chance of rain shown as a ribbon. It is aimed at people who want a short-range view of whether to carry an umbrella, and it offers widgets, rain alerts, and a no-account, no-ads design. The app is free during its early access period and is not intended for severe weather warnings.

About

Our team was tired of weather apps that honestly are just terrible. "Free" apps collect your information and sell it, bombard you with ads, and provide little value.

With the latest advances in AI technology, we've rolled out an intelligent system that takes the National Weather Service data and predicts the weather at a greater level of accuracy than any other app that we've tested.

We hope you enjoy our attempt at showcasing better weather.

THE NEXT NINETY MINUTES One ribbon tells you what the next hour and a half holds. Its height is the chance of rain; above the top line, rain is likely. Its colour is how hard it would fall, from a drizzle to a downpour. Most apps give you one number. Ninety Sky shows you the doubt, so you can make the call on the walk yourself.

HOW IT WORKS • We watch the national radar every two minutes, two kilometres at a time, measure which way the rain is moving, and slide it forward. • NOAA's HRRR model sketches the shape of the rain, and the National Weather Service fills in temperatures and chances hour by hour. • Jev, a decision model, weighs all of it against the radar, one question at a time. • Every forecast is graded against what really fell, and the recipe only changes when it gets better.

EVERYTHING ELSE YOU NEED • Radar that looks ahead: the last hour, then ninety minutes projected, with your block outlined. • The next twelve hours, each with its sky, temperature and chance of rain. • Three and seven days, each day's sky in order, morning to night, with a forecast map. • Widgets for your home screen in three sizes, refreshed more often when rain is close. • Rain alerts when rain is about half an hour out, when it starts, and when it's done. Never more than one of each every half hour, and nothing between 10pm and 7am.

HONEST BY DESIGN No accounts, no ads, no tracking. Your location is used to build your forecast, only while the app is open, and nothing else.

EARLY ACCESS Ninety Sky is new, and everything is free while we're getting started. Tell us what you think from the Send feedback link at the bottom of the app; we read every note.

Coverage: the contiguous United States. Ninety Sky is for the umbrella, not for safety. For severe weather warnings, follow the National Weather Service and local authorities.
