About

Hear a melody and play it straight away on your instrument — that's the goal for many musicians. Play by Ear starts with the most basic step: hear one note and play it back.

SINGLE NOTE • The app plays a note, you play the same note on your instrument, and it checks your pitch in real time • Answers must match the octave too; each question starts with the key's tonic as a reference, so you learn to hear scale degrees • Supports flute, piano, oboe, bassoon, violin, viola, cello, erhu, trombone and tuba — questions stay within your instrument's range • After a correct answer the app waits until you stop playing, so you never need to look at the screen • Missed notes go into your Missed Notes list for focused review

INTERVALS • All 13 intervals from unison to octave, with a custom question pool • Optionally hear the two notes broken first, then together • A wrong answer only turns red — no answer is given away until you hear it yourself

CHORDS • Major, minor, augmented and diminished triads, plus major 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7th, half-diminished and diminished 7th chords • Optional inversions

STATISTICS • Daily practice volume, first-try accuracy and average response time • Your most-missed notes, plus accuracy per interval and per chord

ICLOUD SYNC Practice history, statistics and missed notes sync through your iCloud account.

FREE AND PRO Free: single-note practice in all 12 major keys (scale notes, one note per question), interval training, chord training, the Missed Notes list and 7-day statistics. Pro (one-time purchase, no subscription): natural, harmonic and melodic minor; chromatic note pools; melodic dictation with up to 8 notes per question; your instrument's full range; missed-note practice; 30-day and all-time statistics.

PRIVACY The microphone is used only to detect the pitch you play, on your device and in real time. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded, and the app collects no personal data.
