The Slowsteader: Calm Living

The Slowsteader is a companion for slowsteading, the practice Renata Roberts writes about from her own urban garden and kitchen on the Highveld. Slowsteading is a mindset that shapes a way of living, where you make room at home for small-scale gardening and whole-food cooking, and where creativity and joy are given space to grow because the house and the mind have been cleared to make room for them.

It is not about escaping a busy life or waiting for a farm you may never own. It is about finding peace inside the life you already have, one pot of herbs or one loaf of bread at a time.

IN THE GARDEN Keep a living record of every plant you grow, from the rosemary by the kitchen door to the tomatoes at the bottom of the patch. Point your camera at a leaf to help identify a plant, set a watering and care schedule that suits your climate and your seasons, and log progress photos and harvests as the year turns. Botanical discovery offers planting ideas matched to your own conditions, so you choose what belongs in your soil rather than someone else's.

IN THE KITCHEN Browse Renata's recipes, write your own or adjust hers to suit your household, and log each cook with notes and photos so the recipes your family loves are never lost. Preserving, baking and everyday whole-food cooking all have a home here.

THE JOYOUS JOURNAL Write a short page each day with gentle prompts that help you notice what went well and what is growing, and what you would like to let go of. Your journal can be locked with Face ID for privacy.

ASK RENATA An optional assistant, grounded in Renata's own writing, can answer questions about your garden and your kitchen. It stays off until you choose to switch it on in Settings.

YOUR SLOWSTEAD, YOUR PACE Set your location once and the app adapts care reminders to your climate. Add garden tasks to your calendar if you like, and turn reminders on or off whenever you wish.

MEMBERSHIP Some features require a Slowstead membership, offered as an auto-renewing subscription. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your Apple Account settings.
