In short

Yijing 1882 is a lifestyle app that shows one I Ching hexagram a day, worked out from the Sun's position at noon, with no button to draw another. It also offers a question-first coin cast with saved journal notes, all stored on the phone with no account or internet connection. It suits people who want to study the I Ching slowly, and its standout feature is that each hexagram card is an ink painting that tilts with the phone.

About

One hexagram a day. It comes from the Sun: the app works out where the Sun stands at noon and reads the hexagram and the line it falls in, on the wheel that sets the sixty-four around the Sun's yearly path. It stays the same all day, and there is no button to draw another. Open the app in the morning, look at the card, read what it shows, and keep the question with you.

TODAY FROM THE SUN The Sun moves about one degree a day, so the line moves on every day, now and then by two, and the hexagram changes about every six days. The phone works this out from the date, with no network. If you prefer, Today can be a fixed random pick for each day instead.

A CAST THAT STARTS WITH A QUESTION Type the question first. Then throw three coins six times, by shaking the phone or tapping the coins, and the throws build a hexagram from the bottom line up. Lines that come out changing are marked in vermilion. Turn them over to see the second hexagram, where the situation is heading. Read both, write down what they say to you, and keep the reading.

A JOURNAL THAT STAYS WITH YOU Every saved reading keeps its question, both hexagrams, the changing lines and your notes, and you can add to the notes later. Everything is stored on your phone. There is no account, no cloud, no tracking, and the app never connects to the internet.

THE SIXTY-FOUR Each hexagram is a card with an ink painting on rice paper: the upper trigram above, the lower below, drawn from the eight images of heaven, earth, thunder, water, mountain, wind, fire and lake. The figure is drawn in brush strokes, and the card tilts with your phone like paper in the light. The Deck shows all sixty-four, grouped by the upper trigram, to learn from.

TEXTS WRITTEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD Each hexagram has its Judgment, its Image and its six lines rewritten in plain English, with five keywords and a question to keep in mind. They describe a kind of situation and the conduct that fits it; they do not predict events and they do not tell you what to do. James Legge's 1882 translation is included under each one, line by line, in his own words. Read aloud speaks any of it with the voices on your device.

MADE FOR ONE PERSON Yijing 1882 was built as a personal tool for learning the I Ching slowly, one hexagram at a time. No subscriptions, no AI readings, no notifications unless you ask for one quiet reminder in the morning.
