Ovoid Egg Timer

Ovoid measures the egg and works out the boiling time from physics, instead of guessing from a table.

Put a bank card next to the egg and take a photo. The card is 85.6 mm the world over, so the picture gives the egg's size in millimetres. Choose how you want the yolk, and Ovoid works out the rest: the egg's size and temperature, the method, and the boiling point of water at your altitude.

SIX YOLKS TO CHOOSE FROM • From a runny yolk with a soft white to a hard, crumbly one • Every grade is described, so you know what you get • Creamy yolk, set white — the one for the breakfast sandwich

MEASURE THE EGG, DON'T GUESS • Photograph the egg next to a bank card, or lay it against the screen and measure it there • If you haven't measured, the app uses the size class — a measured egg always takes precedence • Say whether the egg comes from the fridge or is at room temperature

SEVERAL EGGS AT ONCE • Measure several eggs and boil them together — they all come out the same, such as a creamy yolk and a set white, even when the eggs are different sizes • The app tells you when to put each egg in, so that they are all ready at the same time

PHYSICS INSTEAD OF A TABLE • Altitude lowers the boiling point of water — fetch it with a tap, or type it in • Put the egg in boiling water, or let it heat up with the water and tap when it starts to boil • The history lives on the phone: the latest measurement and how long the water took to boil

A COUNTDOWN YOU CAN TRUST • In the last seconds five eggs fade out one by one, with a beep and a nudge in your hand • The alarm sounds when the egg is done, even with the app in the background — and with the app open you feel it in your hand • On iPhone the countdown sits on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, without unlocking • The timer can't be paused — the egg keeps boiling anyway — but it can be cancelled

NOTHING LEAVES YOUR PHONE Ovoid collects nothing about you. The camera and the location are used only to measure the egg and the altitude, and the picture and the position stay on the phone.
