Yielding is an offline reader for the Dao De Jing — all 81 chapters, read slowly.
The Chinese text follows the Wang Bi received edition. Each chapter is unfolded in layers: the original text with pinyin annotation, a modern Chinese paraphrase, a summary of the chapter's argument, line-by-line glosses, five classical commentaries, and variant readings from the Mawangdui silk manuscript and the Guodian bamboo slips.
Note: this app presents the Dao De Jing in Chinese. Interface text is available in English, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese; the source text itself, the annotations and the commentaries are Chinese.
WHAT'S INSIDE · All 81 chapters of the Wang Bi received text, broken at punctuation · A modern Chinese paraphrase for every chapter · 590 line-by-line glosses — tap a phrase to highlight it in the source text · Five classical commentaries, read side by side: Wang Bi, Heshang Gong, Su Zhe, Wang Fuzhi, Hanshan Deqing · Variant readings: the Mawangdui silk text and the Guodian bamboo slips, placed next to the received text · Nine thematic indexes: the source of the Way, governing by non-action, the soft overcoming the hard… · 75 idioms and famous lines, each checked against the chapter it actually comes from
READING AND MEMORISING · A chapter a day, chosen by date — or open a random one · Three levels of pinyin: off, rare and polyphonic characters only, or every character · Fill-in-the-blank drill: about 40% of the text is blanked; tap a gap to reveal it · Recitation mode: the whole chapter is blurred, revealed line by line · Read aloud with the system voice, at an adjustable speed · Full-text search across the source, the paraphrase and the glosses; type a number to jump straight to a chapter
PROGRESS · Mark a chapter as read, memorised or saved · Day streak and total study days · Progress is stored on your device only — deleting the app clears it
READING EXPERIENCE · Three reading themes: Paper, Night, Bamboo · Four text sizes, and it follows the system dark mode · Adapts to iPhone and iPad, portrait and landscape · Interface in English, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese
ABOUT · Fully offline. No ads, no in-app purchases, no sign-up · Collects no personal data and sends nothing off your device · The source text and the classical commentaries are public domain; the Mawangdui and Guodian readings are excavated texts
