Kurz gesagt

Cellular Music is a music app where a Conway's Game of Life style grid acts as a sequencer, with each newly born cell playing a note. It offers 5 built-in rules, 5 scales, 10 instruments, and up to 8 layers with a mixer, plus MIDI and audio export and an AUv3 plug-in for DAWs. Its standout feature is a Theory tab with tappable mini-grids that teach cellular automata.

Info

Cellular Music turns a living grid into a composer. Draw a pattern, pick a rule, and watch — and hear — Conway's Game of Life (and its variants) evolve into an endless, ever-changing piece.

Compose with life itself • Every cell that's born plays a note — the automaton's own evolution IS the sequencer • 5 built-in rules (Conway's Life, HighLife, Day & Night, Seeds, Replicator), or design your own birth/survival rule by hand in the Rule Editor and save it for later • 5 scales (Major/Minor Pentatonic, Chromatic, Dorian, Whole Tone) map the grid's rows to pitch • Draw freehand or stamp known-stable patterns (gliders, blinkers, toads, and more) from a paint-style tool palette • 4 visual grid styles — Neon, Terminal, Pastel, Blueprint — purely cosmetic, pick what you like

Ten real instruments Piano, Warm Pad, Harp, Glockenspiel, Super Saw, Synth Strings, Pure Sine, Soft Sine, Digi Synth, and a curated Percussion kit — every sound is a real sampled instrument, not a synthesized approximation. Tag cells with different sounds and mix them live on the same grid.

Up to 8 layers, one mixing console Run up to 8 independent automatons at once — each with its own rule, scale, register, and instrument — on a channel-strip mixer with per-layer volume, mute, and solo.

Record, export, and learn • Record the sequencer's output and export it as an audio file, or export any layer's recorded steps as a standard MIDI file • Save and reload full presets (rule + scale + layers + tempo) to jump back into a setup instantly • A built-in Theory tab explains cellular automata and Conway's Game of Life, with live, tappable mini-grids you can play with right in the lesson

Bring it into your DAW A built-in AUv3 Audio Unit plug-in brings a self-contained generative automaton instrument directly into GarageBand, Logic, or any other compatible host — synced to host tempo, with its own rule/scale/instrument controls.

Designed for iPhone and iPad alike, with layouts that use the extra iPad screen space rather than just stretching the phone UI.

Whether you want a hypnotic ambient generator, a sequencer that never repeats quite the same way twice, or a new way to think about where music comes from, Cellular Music turns the simplest rules into something that never stops surprising you.
