Stavely: Read Sheet Music

Stop counting lines up from the bottom.

Reading music should be a reflex, not arithmetic. Stavely shows you a note, you press the key, and spaced repetition decides when you need to see that note again — a few minutes a day until every one of them is instant.

HOW IT WORKS

One ladder, five rungs: 1 minute, 10 minutes, 1 day, 2 days, 5 days. Answer a note correctly and it climbs one rung. Miss it and it drops straight back to the bottom. No daily quota — just the notes that are actually due. A day with nothing due still counts towards your streak, so it never punishes a break the schedule gave you.

WHAT YOU GET — FREE

• The treble clef: 36 notes, white keys and black, each one tracked separately • Accuracy and average speed for every individual note, charts of how both change over days, weeks and months, and a deck view showing when each note is next due • Your progress synced across phone and browser — a note answered on one is answered on both • A streak and a daily reminder, both of which switch off

WHAT STAVELY PRO ADDS

• The bass clef: 35 more notes, white keys and black • A 60-second challenge with a leaderboard, kept apart from your schedule so playing it never disturbs your progress • No ads • Learning offline — your progress syncs as soon as you are back online

NOT OUR THEORY

Stavely does two things: it makes you produce the answer yourself, and it spreads those attempts over days. Those are the two study techniques that keep coming first when researchers rank them (Dunlosky et al., 2013; Cepeda et al., 2006).

Neither paper is about the piano, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. They are about memory — holding on to something you have to recall on demand. Naming a note is exactly that. Playing the instrument is a different kind of learning, and Stavely does not claim to teach it.
