Rhino Beetle Diary

Rhino Beetle Diary is a care guide and growth journal for families raising a real Japanese rhinoceros beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus) together. See at a glance what stage your beetle is in and what to do next.

EASY FOR FIRST-TIMERS • Choose "caught", "got" or "bought", then answer when and how big — the app estimates its stage (1st–3rd instar larva, pupa, adult) • A shopping list of only what you're missing, plus illustrated setup steps • A daily "settling-in check" for the first week

KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW • Each beetle card shows its stage, how many days you've raised it, and today's jobs • Jobs are split into "Kid" and "Grown-up"; grown-up jobs need confirmation • Seasonal mode: fall feeding, winter, the last spring soil change, early-summer pupation • Soil-change guide that stops you in spring or when a pupal chamber is visible • Big "Don't touch — just watch" reminders for the pre-pupa, pupa and just-emerged stages

RECORD & REVIEW GROWTH • Stamps, photos, weight, temperature and notes on a timeline (delete any single entry) • A weight graph shows growth at a glance; temperature notes warn when it's outside the right range • The Summary tab compares all your beetles' growth, temperature trends, record counts and recent photos • Pick an icon for each beetle from templates or your own photos • A celebration screen when your beetle reaches a new stage

PREMIUM (ONE-TIME PURCHASE) • 4 foreign species: Hercules, Caucasus, Atlas and Eastern Hercules beetles • Science project PDF: turn photos, graphs and notes into an A4 observation report • The Japanese rhinoceros beetle guide and all record features are free

WHEN YOU NEED HELP • "Help!": fixes for fruit flies, mold, mites, larvae on the surface, not moving and more • "Ask": prepared answers to common questions, with illustrations • Topics about sickness or death gently guide kids to look together with a grown-up

FOR KIDS WHO CAN'T READ YET • Read-aloud buttons on cards, questions and answers, with optional auto read-aloud • Simple words and lots of illustrations

SUPPORTS MANY BEETLES • Japanese rhinoceros beetle, Hercules beetle, Caucasus beetle, Atlas beetle and Eastern Hercules beetle • Larval period, temperature, soil-change timing and whether they must be kept alone switch automatically by species • Seasonal guidance adjusts automatically for the Southern Hemisphere and the tropics

FOR PARENTS • No ads • Records are stored only on the device and in your own private iCloud; nothing is sent to us or anyone else • Notification time and read-aloud settings are behind a parent check • Durations vary with temperature and are estimates. Stag beetles are not supported.
