En bref

SpellKitty: Spelling for Kids is a two-minute daily spelling game for children aged 6 to 12, hosted by a talking kitty that says each word and its meaning. Children spell aloud, and the app judges the spelling on the device with Apple's speech engine, with nothing recorded or uploaded. It also offers a weekly list feature and three levels of real school spelling bee words.

À propos

Your child says the letters. The kitty hears them. Practice this week’s spelling test out loud, or six real spelling bee words a day, judged on your iPhone or iPad with nothing sent anywhere.

SpellKitty is a two-minute daily spelling round for children aged 6 to 12, hosted by a kitty with its own voice. It says the word and what it means; your child holds the button and spells it out loud; the letters land one by one.

HOW A ROUND GOES • The kitty says the word and its meaning. Hear again gives the word in a sentence, then where it comes from, the way a spelling bee pronouncer does. • Hold the button and say the letters. Each letter appears as it is said. • Right on the first try is celebrated. A miss gets one more try, then a gentle look at which letter went wrong and why. • Can’t talk right now? Type the word instead.

YOUR WEEKLY SPELLING LIST Type the week’s words, or paste them, with a meaning after a dash if you like. The kitty says each word and your child spells it out loud, six at a time, with the same two tries and the same practice of misses. Share the list by link or QR and a classmate’s family has the same words in a tap: the words travel inside the link itself. Making, sharing and playing a list is free.

REAL BEE WORDS, THREE LEVELS The 379 words of the school spelling bee study lists: One Bee (grades 1 to 3), Two Bee (grades 4 to 6) and Three Bee (grades 7 and 8). Choose your bee once and every day’s round is drawn for that list. Every word has a meaning and a sentence written for the app, and most have a language of origin.

WHAT BRINGS A SPELLER BACK • A streak for every day played, and a practice round of the words missed that can mend a streak after one day away. • Your words: every word met, how it went, and the ones to practice first. • A share card of the day’s round: six squares and a streak, like a bee scoreboard. • A kitty with a temper: tap it, stroke it, pester it, let it fall asleep. It never sells anything and never scolds in a round.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Your child’s voice stays on the device. Spelling is judged on the device by Apple’s speech engine; nothing is recorded or uploaded. • No account, no ads, no analytics, no third-party code. SpellKitty collects nothing. • Saving is optional: with Sign in with Apple, the streak and the words are kept in your own iCloud. SpellKitty asks Apple for no name and no email. • A grown-up’s question stands in front of the purchase, the share sheet, Settings and the sign-in.

SPELLKITTY PRO The daily round is free, every day, for everyone. SpellKitty Pro is one purchase, paid once: any number of spelling lists kept (one is kept without it), and more rounds after the day’s six, to the last word of the bee list, with the words added later included. No subscription, and Family Sharing is on.

ON IPAD The kitty stands bigger and the round’s card grows with the screen; turned on its side, the words sit beside the kitty. With a keyboard, the space bar is the button: hold it and spell, and Return moves on.

WHAT IT NEEDS iPhone with iOS 18 or iPad with iPadOS 18, or later, and the microphone while the button is held. On devices with Apple Intelligence, the kitty’s explanations are phrased on the device.

Questions: support@spellkitty.com. SpellKitty is independent and not affiliated with Scripps or any spelling bee organization.
