HearTap: English Listening helps learners tell apart easily confused English sounds, such as ship and sheep or bat and bet. Each session plays one word, and the user picks which of two words they heard, with instant feedback. It is aimed at ESL learners and people preparing for English listening tests, and it works offline. HearTap trains your ear to tell apart the English sounds that are easiest to mix up: ship or sheep, bat or bet, think or sink, bag or back.
HOW IT WORKS • Tap play, hear one word, choose which of two words you heard. • Instant feedback. Got it wrong? Replay both words back to back. • Four natural US voices so you learn the sound, not one speaker. • Sessions of 10, 20 or 30 words. A 20-word session takes about a minute.
BUILT ON HOW ENGLISH SOUNDS • Minimal pairs: words that differ by exactly one sound, commonly used in pronunciation training. • IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) for every word. • 43 challenging sound pairs across 900+ word pairs: ship/sheep, bat/bet, think/sink, light/right, vest/west, pen/pain, cap/cup, plus endings like bag/back, walk/walked and thirteen/thirty. • After every answer, both words show their IPA with the sound that differs highlighted, so you learn the symbols as you go.
SEE REAL PROGRESS • Ear Score: the % of words you hear correctly, based on your recent answers across all sound pairs, updated after every session. • Adaptive practice focuses on the sound pairs you miss most. Sessions start easy and get harder as your ear improves. • Mastery per sound pair, streaks and XP levels. • Share your Ear Score card with friends.
