Askesis: Orthodox Calendar

Is this allowed today? Point the camera at any ingredient label and Askesis answers under today's fasting rule: allowed, or not allowed and why. It reads labels in English, Serbian, Russian, Romanian, Hungarian, German, Spanish and two dozen more, names the ingredient the fast sets aside, and says what the next fast day would make of it.

The calendar underneath is the reason to trust the answer. Choose your church once and Askesis keeps the right calendar, old or new, and the right fasting practice, Greek or Slavic, for every day of the year: strict, wine and oil, fish, Cheesefare or fast-free, with every Wednesday and Friday marked. The fast levels are tested on every day of 2026 and 2027: Greek practice against the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese's planner, published through August 2027, and Slavic practice against a calendar kept to the Typikon, with each contested day settled from the Typikon's own text.

Morning and evening prayers, the prayers before Holy Communion, the Six Psalms and Small Compline, in modern English with three sections from Isabel Hapgood's Service Book of 1906. The saints of every day from the OCA's published list, with lives and icons written and painted for Askesis, and the appointed Epistle and Gospel in full. The Old Testament in Brenton's Septuagint, the New Testament in the World English Bible adapted to Orthodox usage, and the Psalter in its twenty kathismata, all readable offline, with verses you can mark and share. People to pray for, living and departed, inside your morning prayers. Your own name day, and the family slava for Serbian readers. Christian Family, 116 pages for the home, from the icon corner to the feast at home, each with its Scripture.

Walk the Nativity Fast and Great Lent one day at a time: a quiet card on Home with the day of the fast, a reminder on the first morning, and the feast's greeting at the end. No streaks to break and nothing to lose. Habits for the daily things: a prayer rule, a psalm, silence, forgiveness before sleep. A Kitchen of 224 fasting recipes, each matched to what the day allows.

Every text is gathered and read by a person. Askesis shows the general discipline of the Church; your priest's guidance for you personally always comes first.

The day's fast and the calendar need no subscription. Askesis Pro, an auto-renewable subscription bought in the app, monthly, yearly or as a family plan, adds the scanner, prayers, habits, the Kitchen, the lives of the saints, Christian Family and the Q&A, Holy Scripture and widgets.

No account, no tracking, no data collected. Everything you write stays on your device and in your own iCloud, and nothing you make is ever deleted, even if a subscription lapses.
