With Handlebars

Most guitarists learn the fretboard in fragments: a shape here, a box there, a scale that only works when it starts on the sixth string. The fragments are fine. What takes years is the map that joins them.

With Handlebars draws that map. Pick a chord or a scale and every tone of it lights up across the whole guitar neck at once, in the tuning you actually play — not a dictionary entry you look up and close, but a room you stay in until the shapes you half-know turn out to be the same handful of tones in different places.

THE WHOLE NECK, ANY TUNING • 168 scales and 58 chord qualities, up to 24 frets • 23 tunings, left- or right-handed • Strict enharmonic spelling — a G# stays a G# and never slides into a lazy Ab, because the name is what explains the shape

LENSES, NOT CLUTTER • Narrow the board to one position, one string, the octaves of a single note, or the guide tones that carry the harmony • Tone roles in colour, roman numerals on the diatonic overlay, the circle of fifths • Plain-language anatomy of whatever you are looking at

A PRACTICE ROOM • Quizzes that send you hunting for tones on the neck • Pattern runs for working a scale across positions • Progression playback with voice-led chords • A metronome and a tonic drone to play against • Sampled guitars, so what you see you can also hear

SHAREABLE BY DESIGN Every setting lives in the link. Any board you land on is a URL you can send to a student, a bandmate, or yourself next week, and it opens exactly as you left it.

QUIET BY DEFAULT No account, no ads, no tracking. The privacy label reads "Data Not Collected" because that is the truth, and the app keeps working with the network off.

WHY THE NAME A nod to "Handlebars" by Flobots, a song about riding a bike hands-free and how far raw talent can coast with nobody steering. Guitar gets learned that way too: memorised grips, borrowed licks, shapes that work right up until the song turns underneath you. With handlebars means hands on the controls — knowing why a shape works, where the next tone lives, and which way to lean when the harmony moves.
