In short

Diskscape: Disk Space Map is a Mac utility that draws every file and folder in a chosen location as a treemap, with the biggest folders shown as the largest boxes. It is aimed at people who want to see what is using up their disk without digging through menus. One standout detail is that it reads all files locally, with no account or network connection, and leaves cloud folders out of its totals.

About

Diskscape draws every byte in a folder as a map. The biggest folder is the biggest box, so whatever is eating your disk is the first thing you see. No lists, no sorting, no digging three menus deep.

Point it at your home folder. It reads about 200,000 files a second, so a four-million-file home folder is mapped in roughly twenty seconds. Then click into any box to go deeper, and keep clicking.

WHAT YOU GET

- A treemap of every file and folder, sized by what it actually takes on disk - Folders take the colour of what is inside them: code, media, documents, archives, caches, git - Worth a look: build output, node_modules, virtualenvs, Xcode DerivedData, iOS DeviceSupport, Gradle caches and fat git histories, found, grouped and totalled with a note on what regenerates - Move anything to the Trash without leaving the map, or reveal it in Finder - Colour by age to find what you stopped using years ago - Count by number of files instead of bytes, to find the folder hiding a million tiny ones - Apparent size and size on disk, one toggle apart - Keyboard navigation, breadcrumbs, and a depth control for how far down the map draws

HONEST NUMBERS

Diskscape counts what the disk actually gives up, not what the files claim. Hard links are counted once, not twice. Cloud folders live on someone else's server, so they are left out and labelled instead of inflating your total. Folders that will not answer are reported, never silently skipped.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN

Diskscape reads only the folder you choose, and nothing about your files ever leaves your Mac. No account, no network, no analytics, no third-party SDKs. It reads names, sizes and dates to draw the map. It never opens your files.

FREE TO USE, THEN A SUBSCRIPTION

There is no wall in front of Diskscape. It opens straight into the app, with no account and nothing to buy.

Your first seven days of use are free and fully featured. A day is only counted on a day you actually run a scan, so a tool you reach for once a month still gives you seven real sessions.

After that, scanning and browsing the map stay free for good. An auto-renewing monthly subscription unlocks moving files to the Trash from inside the map, and keeps the app being made. The subscription pane is always one click away in the top right of the window, and under the Diskscape menu.
