In short

SiteAspect is a photo app for planning gardens and landscapes. Each shot records the true-north bearing the lens faces, burned into the image with the date, location, altitude and compass accuracy, and it also offers sun path, sun hours and slope tools. It suits home gardeners, landscape designers and horticulturists, and everything stays on the iPhone with no account or tracking.

About

SiteAspect is a camera for planning gardens and landscapes. Every photo records which way the camera was facing, so you never again have to photograph a compass and pair the two pictures by hand.

A heading tape across the top of the camera shows your bearing from true north, such as 023° T NNE, and is burned into each photo along with the date, location, altitude and compass accuracy. Months later, you will know exactly which bed, fence line or view a photo shows, and which way it faces.

SITE ANALYSIS TOOLS

- Compass camera: true-north bearing for the direction the lens faces, with an accuracy badge and calibration guidance. - Sun path: see today's path of the sun across your site through the camera, with hour marks and the sun's current position. Turn on Seasons to add the summer solstice, equinox and winter solstice, and check whether a tree or fence will shade a bed in midwinter. - Sun hours: turn slowly on the spot to scan the skyline, then see the hours of direct sun for each month of the year, allowing for trees and buildings. - Slope meter: lay the phone on the ground to read slope in degrees, percentage and 1 in x, and the direction the slope faces, with plain-language notes on what that aspect means for planting. - Altitude scale: height above sea level from GPS and the barometer. Changes in height across a site are accurate to well under a metre.

AUGMENTED REALITY OVERLAYS

- Horizon compass ring with N, E, S and W pinned to the real horizon. - Pitch ladder for reading the angle to treetops and rooflines. - Ground grid with 1 m squares and a north line. - Tap to pin a bearing to any tree, corner or view.

MADE FOR SITE RECORDS

- Annotated photo plus a clean copy, both saved to Photos. - Bearing written into each photo's GPS metadata (image direction), so mapping and GIS software can read it. - True or magnetic north, 8 or 16 compass points. - Works in the southern and northern hemispheres; aspect advice follows your hemisphere.
