Birdie: New Puzzle Game

Birdie is a calm measuring puzzle about birds on telegraph wires.

Each wire holds so many birds, and each has a short dark sleeve of insulation in the middle. Your job is to get every bird standing on a sleeve. When they all are, the switch throws itself, current runs down the line, and the circuit closes.

ONE RULE Tap a wire to lift its flock, tap another to send it. As many birds fly as there is room for — never fewer, and you never choose how many. That one rule is the whole puzzle: you can't split a flock by hand, so you have to measure with the wires themselves.

COUNT, THEN MOVE Every level has a small budget of moves. Use them up with a bird still on bare copper and the switch throws anyway — the unlucky ones light up, show their skeletons and drop off the wire. Then it's straight back to the start to try again. Finish in the fewest possible moves and you earn a gold star.

WHAT'S INSIDE • 500 levels in 20 groups of 25, each named for a bird — Sparrow and Robin to Roller and Hummingbird — every one solvable, every one verified by computer. • A gentle start: level 1 walks you through it move by move, and the bulb points out the next move of a shortest solution whenever you're stuck. • Restart any time, and from level 51 undo any move. You can never get stuck in a position you can't get back from. • A little world around the wires: the sun sets over every level and the houses put their lights on; boats, a pool flamingo and the odd tractor pass by; tap a tree and its birds fly out. • Birds with character — sparrows, swallows, toucans, macaws, hoopoes, cockatoos and more — who look about, sing, and get very nervous on your last move. • Plays fully with VoiceOver: every wire tells you its birds, its room and its sleeve.
