E6B Flight Computer: Crabwise

Crabwise is an E6B flight computer for iPhone, built for student pilots, private pilots and CFIs who want the answer and the working behind it.

WIND TRIANGLE (FREE) • Find heading: enter TAS, true course and the wind to get wind correction angle, true heading and ground speed • Find wind: enter heading, TAS, track made good and ground speed to back out the wind you actually flew in • A live vector diagram shows the air, wind and ground legs of the triangle

UNIT CONVERSION (FREE) Nautical miles, statute miles and kilometers; knots, mph and km/h; pounds and kilograms; US gallons and liters; °C and °F; inHg and hPa; feet and meters. Fuel weight for avgas (6.0 lb/US gal) and Jet-A (6.7 lb/US gal).

CROSSWIND BEFORE YOU LAND Enter the runway number and the tower or ATIS wind. Crabwise shows the crosswind from the left or right, the headwind or tailwind, and the components in gusts.

ALTITUDE AND AIRSPEED Pressure altitude from field elevation and altimeter setting, the way the FAA knowledge test expects it. Density altitude from the full ISA density ratio, not the 120 ft per degree rule of thumb. True airspeed from calibrated airspeed with compressible flow, and Mach number.

TIME, SPEED, DISTANCE AND FUEL Solve for whichever one is missing. Fuel burn, fuel flow, endurance, and total required fuel with taxi, run-up and reserve. Use gallons, liters or pounds.

WEIGHT AND BALANCE Add stations with weight and arm, get moments, total weight and center of gravity. Enter the corner points of the CG envelope from your POH and see at once whether you are inside it.

SEE EVERY STEP Each result can open into the formula and the numbers substituted into it, the way you would work it on a paper E6B. Useful for the written exam, the oral and the checkride.
