HEXTAZE: Glitch Video Effects

HEXTAZE turns your iPhone camera into a visual instrument. Play an effect live with your finger, lock it to the tempo, and record clips that loop on the bar.

Every look is rendered live on your iPhone. What you play is what you record: the rendered picture itself, never a screen recording, with no buttons in the clip.

PLAY THE PICTURE • An XY pad you play like a performance controller. Touch a point, get that value; let go and it springs back to centre. • Hold the record key and slide up to latch: the take keeps rolling and the whole screen becomes the pad. • Lock the pad where it is, or roll the die for a new variation of any look.

ON THE BEAT • Press play beside the pad and it moves on the tempo, from 4 bars down to 1/16, with dotted and triplet divisions. • Tap the tempo, let the microphone find it in the room (LISTEN stays lit while it looks), or take it from your own track. • DROP's strobe and colour cuts follow the same clock. SMEAR's SPECTRUM map and DROP's backdrop move with the sound itself.

LOOPS WITHOUT A SEAM • Import a track (MP3, M4A, WAV or AIFF). HEXTAZE finds its tempo, beats and bars on the phone. • Pick 2, 4, 8 or 16 bars. The take counts in one bar, records exactly your bars and stops on the downbeat. • The song is cut on the same bars, to the sample, with no click at the join. A faint silhouette of your first frame helps you land the picture back where it started.

EFFECTS THAT KNOW WHO IS IN FRAME • On-device person detection: apply an effect to you alone, or to everything but you. • GHOST, WARP, AURA and TRIO bend time around the subject. TRIO puts you in front of your mirrors. • DROP replaces the room behind you with living matter: marble, vortex, ink, TV snow, lost signal.

Bit-crush and retro palettes, the smear and blooming of a 2007 digicam, video feedback spirals, a 3D mesh you tilt with the phone. Chain up to three effects, each on its own zone. • WARP: five mechanisms, ECHO, RGB, SLICE (slit-scan), HITCH (beat stutter) and SWING. • TRIAD: five ways to split colour, BURST, SHIFT, SPIN, ZOOM, SWAP. • MESH: six shapes, WAVE, PEAKS, BLOCKS, DUNES, RIPPLE, BULGE, with TOPO, DOTS, HIVE and SCAN patterns. • DROP's PUSH makes the backdrop matter part around you.

A FINISH ON EVERY LOOK Every preset ends in colour: 15 palettes for effects without colour of their own, 7 grades that keep the colours of the ones that have it. A key beside the pad changes it.

KEEP YOUR LOOKS Save a look to MINE, share it as a link that carries the whole look, or enter one a friend sent. The link is built on your iPhone; nothing is uploaded.

MADE FOR SHORT VIDEO • Portrait, front or back camera, 1× or 0.5×. • Import a video and perform the effects over it. • Photos too: the key beside the red button switches to photo, with every look. • Share with sound, share a silent copy to add the music on your platform, or save to Photos.
