Ashigrain: Film Emulation

Ashigrain gives your videos and photos the colour, grain and glow of motion picture and still film. Most of its film looks are modelled on the technical data the manufacturer published for that film: characteristic curves, spectral sensitivity, dye density, sharpness and grain. The rest are reconstructed from handbooks and specifications. Everything is processed on your iPhone or iPad.

HOW IT WORKS • Studio: pick videos and photos from your library in the built-in system picker, then tap Edit. • Edit: choose a film and shape the look on your own footage. Edit several clips at once, give each its own look, or apply one look to all of them. • Render: your renders appear in Results, where you can play them back, save them to Photos, share them, save them to Files or delete them. An interrupted render can be resumed.

FILMS • 18 films in five groups: Natural, Vivid & saturated, Vintage & odd, Black & white, and Print film. Colour negative, colour reversal and black-and-white. • Negatives are printed onto a print film, as for a cinema release print. Choose from the print films each negative pairs with. • Film formats from Super 8 to 35 mm. The format sets grain size, glow and sharpness relative to the frame, and you can crop to the shape of the film gate.

CONTROLS • Exposure, push and pull, strength of the look, halation, bloom, grain amount and size, sharpness, gate weave, flicker and vignette. • Turn the effect off to compare with the original in the preview. • Starter presets are included, and you can save your own settings as presets.

VIDEO • Renders HEVC (H.265) video in SDR. The original audio, rotation, capture date and location are kept. • Accepts SDR video and HDR video recorded on iPhone; HDR is converted to SDR. Apple Log, PQ (HDR10) and ProRes RAW footage is not supported, and the app tells you when a clip cannot be used. • Trim clips before rendering, and render several clips in one go.

PHOTOS • Opens HEIC and JPEG photos and renders HEIC. Orientation, capture date and location are kept.

RENDERING • Film rendering is heavy work for a phone. On iPhone, renders run while Ashigrain is open: if you leave the app, a render pauses and continues when you return. On iPad models with an M3 chip or later, renders continue in the background. • If the device gets too hot, a render pauses and continues when it cools down.

PRIVACY • All processing happens on your device. There is no account and no sign-in, and the app collects no data. • The system picker shares only the items you choose. Saving to Photos uses add-only permission.

FREE AND PRO • Your first five renders are at full resolution. A free render is used only when it finishes rendering. • After that, choose for each render: Render 480p, with the long edge capped at 854 pixels, or subscribe to Ashigrain Pro for full resolution. • Ashigrain Pro renders videos and photos at full resolution. Ashigrain Pro is a monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription; the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for eligible users. The App Store shows the price before you buy. • Payment is charged to your Apple Account. A subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. REQUIREMENTS • iPhone or iPad with an A13 Bionic chip or later, running iOS 26 or later.
