Every return raises the pot. Win the point and the pot is yours, banked by the square: a rally of 5 pays 25, a rally of 12 pays 144. Lose the point and it is gone. So every rally asks the same question. End it now, or let it grow?
And now you can attack. Flick your thumb forward as the ball arrives and you smash it. Time it dead on for a PERFECT. Mistime it and your paddle is stunned, with the ball still coming.
SEVEN WAYS TO PLAY
Volo. Three hearts against a ladder of fifteen rivals and three bosses. Each one plays differently: Wall never misses a slow ball, Mirror stands where you stand, Metronome only moves on the beat.
Chaos. The same ladder with twenty two wild cards landing on both of you every few seconds. Blackout. Decoys. Swapped paddles. A second ball. Never one sided, always survivable.
Duel. Two players, one phone, one end each. Free, and the reason to show it to someone.
Classic. 1972 rules, nothing added. First to eleven, a square ball, three blips.
Daily. One rival and one court a day, the same for everybody. Three tries. Keep a streak.
League. Found a club in a car park and climb four divisions, seven nights a season. Pick your fixtures, choose your approach, train once a week. A cup, a rival, a derby, and the other clubs moving around you.
Zen. You, a wall that never misses, and the music.
